The Main Mirror and Central Tower

An artist’s rendition of the Extremely Large Telescope’s 39-metre main mirror (M1) and reflection of the central tower. This image contains only a portion of each component, however a number of the 798 individual mirror segments that comprise M1 can be seen. Each segment measures 1.4 metres across and just 5 cm thick. The segments work synchronously to effectively create one extremely large mirror.
