Casting giant Mirrors

Far too large to be made from a single pane of glass, the 39-metre primary mirror of the ELT is cast from 798 individual hexagonal panels each 1.4-metres across. These panels are being cast by the German glass company SCHOTT located in Mainz as part of a contract signed in 2017 for the production of the M1, M2, M3 and M4 mirrors.
