The VLT’s Auxiliary Telescopes

Three of the four 1.8-metre Auxiliary Telescopes are perfectly aligned on the VLT platform, atop Cerro Paranal, in the II Region of Chile. The VLT’s Auxiliary Telescopes are entirely dedicated to interferometric observations. Their positions can be changed between 30 different docking stations across the VLT platform. In the background on the right, Cerro Armazones, the selected site for the ELT, is clearly visible.
