Astrónomo do ESO recebe Bolsa Sinergia do Conselho Europeu de Investigação

O astrónomo do ESO Leonardo Testi juntamente com Patrick Hennebelle do CEA Paris-Saclay em França, Ralf Klessen da Universidade de Heidelberg na Alemanha e Sergio Molinari do Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica de Roma, em Itália, receberam 12,6 milhões de euros do Conselho Europeu de investigação (ERC, sigla do inglês para European Research Council) no âmbito do projeto "ECOGAL – Understanding our Galactic ecosystem: From the disk of the Milky Way to the formation sites of stars and planets" (ECOGAL — Comprender o nosso ecossistema galáctico: Do disco da Via Láctea aos locais de formação de estrelas e planetas). Este projeto é um dos 37 que receberá uma Bolsa Sinergia financiada pelo ERC em 2019 e é o único na área da astronomia.
O projeto ECOGAL junta quatro grupos de investigação da Europa na vanguarda da astronomia observacional, astrofísica numérica, desenvolvimento de instrumentos e astroinformática. A bolsa ERC criará cerca de 30 posições para bolseiros de pós-doutoramento, estudantes de doutoramento e outro pessoal da equipa de investigação durante os seis anos de duração do projeto.
O objetivo científico principal do ECOGAL é a construção de um modelo de previsão da formação de estrelas e planetas na nossa galáxia, a Via Láctea. Os investigadores do projeto analisarão dados colectados pelo Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) durante várias grandes campanhas de observação e também por uma multitude de programas mais pequenos, num total de mais de 1000 horas de tempo de observação. Parte do financiamento será usado em novos componentes para os futuros receptores de Banda 2 do ALMA — os detectores altamente sensíveis que serão instalados em cada uma das 66 antenas do ALMA — o que trará benefícios a longo prazo para os astrónomos que observam com este telescópio.
O ERC é a principal organização financiadora na Europa para a investigação de vanguarda. As bolsas Sinergia do ERC são atribuídas a pequenas equipas de investigadores excelentes, cujas instituições de acolhimento estão baseadas na Europa. Com um valor total de 363 milhões de euros em 2019, estas bolsas especiais permitem a grupos de dois a quatro investigadores de topo juntar competências, conhecimentos e recursos complementares num único projeto, com o objetivo de investigar alguns dos problema mais complexos, muitas vezes espalhados por várias disciplinas científicas.
