Andreas Kaufer inícia o seu cargo como novo Diretor Geral do ESO

Hoje, dia 1 de Setembro de 2026, Andreas Kaufer assumiu o cargo de Diretor Geral do ESO. Kaufer assume o cargo numa altura em que a construção do Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) do ESO se aproxima da sua fase final, o ALMA está a passar por uma grande atualização e o ESO começa a pensar no seu próximo programa. Andreas Kaufer sucede a Xavier Barcons, que ocupou o cargo de Diretor Geral do ESO desde 2017 até ao final do seu mandato, que termina precisamente a 31 de Agosto de 2026.
Kaufer diz: "As minhas prioridades para os próximos cinco anos são muito claras. Em primeiro lugar, iremos concentrar-nos na conclusão e entrada em funcionamento do ELT. Para mim, o ELT não é o fim de uma jornada, mas sim o início de um novo capítulo, já que irá desencadear uma revolução na astrofísica observacional. Atualmente, não conseguimos sequer antecipar o que iremos descobrir. Paralelamente, trabalharemos no sentido de maximizar o retorno científico de todas as infraestruturas do ESO de forma segura, eficiente e eficaz, para garantir que possam continuar a funcionar durante muitas décadas. O meu objetivo é preparar o ESO para o futuro para além da primeira luz do ELT, o que será possível investindo no pessoal e na tecnologia e pensando na próxima geração de oportunidades científicas."
Andreas Kaufer, o nono Diretor Geral do ESO, traz consigo uma vasta experiência em investigação astronómica, instrumentação e gestão operacional. Kaufer doutorou-se em Astronomia na Universidade de Heidelberg, Alemanha, em 1996 e, posteriormente, trabalhou no Observatório Estatal de Heidelberg, onde investigou as atmosferas de estrelas massivas e a evolução química de galáxias, ao mesmo tempo que desenvolvia e construía instrumentação astronómica. Kaufer juntou-se ao ESO em 1999 como membro do grupo de operações científicas, contribuindo para a entrada em funcionamento do recém construído Very Large Telescope. Tornou-se Diretor do Observatório La Silla Paranal em 2006 e foi nomeado o primeiro Diretor de Operações do ESO em 2008.
Agora, como Diretor Geral, Andreas Kaufer pretende continuar a promover ciência da mais alta qualidade com o pessoal, os telescópios e os instrumentos de classe mundial do ESO, através das melhores observações astronómicas possíveis.
"Para mim o que torna o ESO verdadeiramente especial é a sua capacidade em reunir países, pessoas e uma extraordinária variedade de conhecimentos especializados. Juntos, conseguimos alcançar objetivos que nenhum país conseguiria atingir sozinho. Trata-se de uma combinação única de ambição científica, excelência em engenharia, experiência operacional e visão a longo prazo", afirma Kaufer. "Isto só é possível graças ao apoio contínuo dos nossos 16 Estados Membros e do nosso país anfitrião, o Chile. Estou ansioso por trabalhar com eles e com toda a comunidade do ESO, num momento em que enfrentamos desafios e oportunidades entusiasmantes."
