Las maravillas de Paranal
La Imagen de la Semana de hoy muestra toda la magnitud de la belleza de Paranal. El Cerro Paranal, en el desierto de Atacama (Chile), la cima montañosa que alberga el VLT (Very Large Telescope) de ESO, es un lugar que cuenta con numerosas maravillas. Y esta imagen panorámica tomada por la astrofotógrafa chilena, Alexis Trigo, sin duda los captura todos.
Justo delante, se alza uno de los Telescopios Auxiliares móviles (AT). Mientras este telescopio "relativamente" pequeño de 1,8 m tiene los ojos cerrados, sus hermanas mayores, las Unidades de Telescopio (UT), cada uno con un espejo de 8,2 m, escudriñan el cielo. Los láseres que emergen de los UT crean cada uno una estrella artificial brillante en el cielo, de modo que los movimientos y remolinos de la atmósfera puedan medirse y corregirse para entregar datos precisos.
El telescopio UT4, a la derecha, llevaba ya varios años equipado con cuatro láseres. Pero en noviembre de 2025, cuando se tomó esta imagen, se estaban probando láseres adicionales en las otras tres UT. Estos nuevos láseres forman parte de una actualización del Interferómetro VLT (VLTI) y su instrumento GRAVITY, llamado GRAVITY+. Las cuatro UTs pueden funcionar juntas como un enorme telescopio virtual, y estos nuevos láseres les permitirán observar objetos mucho más débiles que antes.
Pero los telescopios no son la única maravilla que destaca en esta imagen: el cielo oscuro que puede verse al fondo es igual de impactante, con el centro de la Vía Láctea brillando hacia la izquierda. Esta visión, lamentablemente, está contaminada por muchos "arañazos" causados por megaconstelaciones de satélites, una amenaza creciente para la astronomía en la que ESO está trabajando arduamente con el fin de mitigar sus efectos.
