Andreas Kaufer utsedd till ESO:s nästa generaldirektör

Europeiska sydobservatoriets (ESO) råd har utsett Andreas Kaufer till ESO:s nya generaldirektör. Kaufer, som för närvarande är ESO:s verksamhetschef, efterträder Xavier Barcons, som kommer att vara kvar som generaldirektör till slutet av augusti 2026.
"Vi är glada över att Andreas Kaufer har accepterat tjänsten som ESO:s nästa generaldirektör. Efter att ha lett ESO:s verksamhet i över 17 år är han idealisk att leda organisationen under de kommande åren, då ESO:s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) färdigställs och sökandet efter nästa innovativa ESO-program pågår", säger Tom Ray, ordförande för ESO:s råd.
Han tillade: ”Jag är tacksam för att Xavier Barcons outtröttligt har lett denna organisation sedan september 2017 och kommer att fortsätta att göra det under de kommande månaderna. Han har säkerställt enorma framsteg i en mängd olika ESO-projekt, särskilt med byggandet av ELT, samtidigt som han effektivt har hanterat en mängd utmaningar.”
Andreas Kaufer föddes i Heidelberg, Tyskland, och kommer att efterträda Xavier Barcons i september 2026. Kaufer tog en doktorsexamen i astronomi från Heidelbergs universitet 1996 och arbetade därefter vid Heidelbergs observatorium, där han byggde astronomiska instrument och forskade om variabla atmosfärer hos massiva stjärnor och galaxers kemiska utveckling. Han började på ESO 1999 och bidrog inledningsvis under driftstarten av det då nybyggda Very Large Telescope. Han blev chef för La Silla Paranal-observatoriet 2006 och har varit verksamhetschef på ESO sedan 2008, en roll där han ansvarar för den kompletta driften av ESO-observatorierna i Chile och den europeiska delen av ALMA-operationen.

Han kommer utan tvekan att vägleda ESO väl genom de framgångar och utmaningar som de kommande åren kommer att medföra.”

Europeiska sydobservatoriet (ESO) möjliggör för astronomer världen över att utforska universums mysterier. Tillsammans med internationella partners driver ESO anläggningen ALMA på Chajnantorplatån som observerar himlen i millimeter- och submillimetervåglängder. Vid Cerro Armazones, nära Paranal, bygger vi för närvarande ESO:s Extremely Large Telescope, ”världens största öga mot himlen”. Från kontoret i Santiago, Chile, stödjer vi verksamheten i landet och samverkar med det chilenska samhället och våra samarbetspartners.
