Andreas Kaufer beginnt als neuer Generaldiorektor der ESO

Heute, am 1. September 2026, hat Andreas Kaufer seine Amtszeit als Generaldirektor der ESO angetreten. Kaufer übernimmt die Funktion in einer Phase, in der sich der Bau des Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) der ESO der Finalisierung nähert, ALMA umfassend modernisiert wird und die ESO mit der Suche nach ihrem nächsten Programm beginnt. Er folgt auf Xavier Barcons, der vom Jahr 2017 bis zum Ende seiner Amtszeit am 31. August 2026 als Generaldirektor der ESO tätig war.
Kaufer erklärt: „Meine Prioritäten für die kommenden fünf Jahre sind ganz klar gesteckt. Zunächst werden wir uns darauf konzentrieren, das ELT erfolgreich fertigzustellen und in Betrieb zu nehmen. Das ELT bedeutet für mich jedoch nicht das Ende einer Reise, sondern den Beginn eines neuen Kapitels. Es wird eine Revolution in der beobachtenden Astrophysik auslösen, und wir können heute noch gar nicht absehen, was wir alles entdecken werden. Parallel dazu werden wir daran arbeiten, den wissenschaftlichen Ertrag aller ESO-Einrichtungen auf sichere, effiziente und wirksame Weise zu maximieren, um ihren Betrieb für viele Jahrzehnte zu sichern. Mein Ziel ist es, die ESO auf die Zukunft nach dem ersten Licht des ELT vorzubereiten. Das werden wir erreichen, indem wir in unsere Mitarbeitenden sowie in Technologien investieren und uns Gedanken über die nächste Generation wissenschaftlicher Aussichten machen.“
Kaufer, der neunte Generaldirektor der ESO, bringt eine umfassende Erfahrung in astronomischer Forschung, Instrumentierung und betrieblichem Management in das Amt ein. Er wurde 1996 an der Universität Heidelberg im Fach Astronomie promoviert und arbeitete anschließend an der Landessternwarte Heidelberg. Dort forschte er an den Atmosphären massereicher Sterne sowie an der chemischen Evolution von Galaxien und entwickelte und baute zugleich astronomische Instrumente. Im Jahr 1999 wechselte Kaufer zur ESO, wo er als Teil der Wissenschaftsbetriebsgruppe an der Inbetriebnahme des damals neu errichteten Very Large Telescope mitwirkte. Im Jahr 2006 übernahm er die Leitung des La-Silla-Paranal-Observatoriums und wurde 2008 zum ersten Betriebsdirektor der ESO ernannt.
Als Generaldirektor beabsichtigt Kaufer nun, gemeinsam mit den erstklassigen Mitarbeitenden, Teleskopen und Instrumenten der ESO weiterhin Wissenschaft auf höchstem Niveau zu ermöglichen und so bestmögliche astronomische Beobachtungen zu gewährleisten.
„Was die ESO für mich wirklich einzigartig macht, ist ihre Fähigkeit, Länder, Menschen und eine außergewöhnliche Vielfalt an Fachwissen zusammenzubringen. Gemeinsam erreichen wir Dinge, die kein Land alleine bewältigen könnte. Es ist eine einmalige Kombination aus wissenschaftlichem Ehrgeiz, technischer Spitzenleistung, betrieblichem Fachwissen und langfristiger Vision“, sagt Kaufer. „Dies ist nur dank der fortwährenden Unterstützung unserer 16 Mitgliedstaaten und unseres Gastlandes Chile möglich. Ich freue mich darauf, mit ihnen und der gesamten ESO-Gemeinschaft zusammenzuarbeiten, um die anstehenden spannenden Aufgaben und Chancen anzugehen.“
