Il report annuale dell’ESO del 2020 è ora disponibile. Presenta una sintesi delle numerose attività dell'ESO durante l'anno. I contenuti includono:
- L'effetto della pandemia COVID-19 sull'ESO, comprese le misure di sicurezza e l'impatto sul personale;
- La graduale diminuzione del lavoro svolto negli osservatori che li ha portati in “Stato di Sicurezza" a marzo e la ripresa iniziata a settembre, che ha permesso ai dati scientifici di fluire nuovamente da Paranal, APEX e La Silla;
- Il lavoro portato avanti nei laboratori sotto misure di sicurezza molto rigide ha fornito contributi cruciali ai progetti, così come progressi sul design, sul software, sui dati e su altri progetti;
- Ulteriori progressi compiuti sia all'ESO che nell'industria sull'Extremely Large Telescope, sul Programma di Strumentazione del Paranal, e sui progetti di sviluppo di ALMA;
- Come lo sfruttamento scientifico dei dati dell'ESO ha continuato a prosperare durante l'anno. Tra i punti salienti c'è la conferma delle previsioni della Relatività Generale in merito alla precessione orbitale della stella S2 attorno al buco nero supermassiccio al centro della nostra Galassia. In relazione a ciò il Premio Nobel 2020 per la Fisica è stato conferito per la scoperta di questo buco nero a Reinhard Genzel (che ha lavorato con l'ESO sull'argomento per più di 30 anni) e Andrea Ghez (con un lavoro sostenuto dall'Osservatorio W.M. Keck), così come a Roger Penrose per il lavoro teorico sui buchi neri;
- Il grande traguardo dell'approvazione da parte del Consiglio dell'ESO del pieno finanziamento del Programma di Costruzione dell'Extremely Large Telescope - che include anche la prima serie di strumenti del telescopio e la preparazione di Paranal per ospitare e gestire il telescopio - così come l'approvazione da parte del Consiglio della strategia dell'ESO per il prossimo decennio;
- Come le attività di coinvolgimento con la comunità scientifica e la società in generale sono state rifocalizzate con successo in condizioni di pandemia con forum di discussione online molto frequentati, conferenze e dibattiti aperti all'intera comunità scientifica così come tour virtuali dell'osservatorio per il pubblico.
