Un irrigatore stellare
Questa Immagine della settimana mostra il giovane corpo celeste 244-440, situato nella nebulosa di Orione, come osservato dal VLT (Very Large Telescope) dell’ESO. Si tratta dell’immagine più nitida dell’oggetto mai ottenuta. La struttura ondulata di colore magenta è un getto di materia emesso vicino alla stella, ma perché ha quella forma?
Le stelle molto giovani sono spesso circondate da dischi di materia che precipita verso di esse. Parte di questa materia può venire espulsa attraverso forti getti perpendicolari al disco. Il getto a forma di S di 244-440 suggerisce che al centro di questo oggetto non c’è solo una stella ma ben due che orbitano l’una intorno all’altra. Questo moto orbitale cambia ciclicamente l’orientamento del getto, come accade con un irrigatore. Un’altra possibilità è che le forti radiazioni delle altre stelle nella nube di Orione alterino la forma del getto.
Queste osservazioni, riportate in un nuovo articolo a cura di Andrew Kirwan della Maynooth University, in Irlanda, sono state realizzate con lo strumento MUSE (Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer) installato sul VLT dell’ESO in Cile. Il rosso, il verde e il blu mostrano rispettivamente la distribuzione del ferro, dell’azoto e dell’ossigeno. Ma questa è solo una piccola parte dei dati raccolti da MUSE, che in realtà scatta migliaia di immagini con diversi colori o lunghezze d’onda contemporaneamente. Questo permette agli astronomi non solo di studiare la distribuzione di svariati elementi, ma anche il loro moto.
Inoltre, MUSE è installato sul telescopio UT4 del VLT, equipaggiato con una struttura avanzata per l’ottica adattiva che corregge il disturbo dovuto alla turbolenza atmosferica, per ottenere immagini più definite rispetto a quelle del telescopio spaziale Hubble. Quindi queste nuove osservazioni permetteranno agli astronomi di studiare con un dettaglio mai raggiunto prima la formazione delle stelle in nebulose massicce come quella di Orione.
