ESO-Astronom mit Sparlamento-Preis für Forschung und Entwicklung 2019 geehrt

Der ESO-Astronom Paolo Padovani wurde für seinen Beitrag zur Förderung italienischer Spitzenleistungen in der Astronomie mit dem „Sparlamento-Preis für Forschung und Entwicklung 2019“ ausgezeichnet. Die Feier fand am 5. Juli 2019 im italienischen Parlament in Rom statt. Es war die erste astronomische Zeremonie überhaupt in diesem Gebäude.
Paolo Padovani erforscht Aktive Galaxienkerne (AGN) mit Daten, die das komplette elektromagnetische Spektrum abdecken, und beschäftigt sich mit sehr tiefen Radiomessungen und der Neutrinoastronomie. In seinen ersten Jahren bei der ESO leitete er die Teilnahme der Organisation am virtuellen Observatorium, und seit 2011 arbeitet er im ELT Science Office in der Abteilung Wissenschaft.
Bei der Verleihung dieser neuen Auszeichnung, die von Sparlamento organisiert wurde, zeigte Padovani eine Präsentation über die ESO und das Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), bei der er den Einfluss Italiens hervorhob, und hielt eine Lectio Magistralis über „Neutrinos von supermassereichen schwarzen Löchern: Ein neues Fenster ins Universum“, wobei er sich auf die Entdeckung einer weit entfernten Quelle hochenergetischer Neutrinos bezog.
Einmal fertiggestellt, wird das ELT „das größte Auge der Welt am Himmel“ sein und die größten astronomischen Herausforderungen unserer Zeit angehen. Sowohl die italienische Industrie als auch Astronomen tragen zur Entwicklung des ELT bei. So wurde zum Beispiel der größte Auftrag in der Geschichte der bodengebundenen Astronomie für den Bau der ELT-Kuppel und der Teleskop-Struktur an eine italienische Firma vergeben (eso1617), während das Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF) in Zusammenarbeit mit Frankreich und der ESO das MAORY-Projekt leitet. MAORY ist das Multi-conjugate Adaptive Optics RelaY, ein neues adaptives Optikmodul für das ELT (ann15093). Außerdem wurde der Auftrag für den adaptiven vierten Spiegel (M4) des ELT an das AdOptica-Konsortium vergeben, das aus zwei italienischen Unternehmen besteht: ADS International und Microgate (ann15045).
Während der Preisverleihung fand auch eine Diskussionsrunde statt zum Thema: „Die Zukunft der italienischen Astronomie in der internationalen Landschaft: Die Rolle der Regierung bei der Unterstützung der italienischen astronomischen Forschung“. Zahlreiche Gäste nahmen daran teil, darunter Nichi D’Amico, Präsident des Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF), Ginevra Trinchieri, Präsidentin der Italienischen Astronomischen Gesellschaft, Gianpietro Marchiori, CEO der European Industrial Engineering Group, Cristina DelTutto, Direktorin von Sparlamento, und Marco Bella, Mitglied des italienischen Parlaments.
Der Preis ist nicht nur eine wohlverdiente Auszeichnung für Paolo Padovanis Beiträge, sondern hebt auch die lange und erfolgreiche Geschichte bahnbrechender Arbeiten italienischer Astronomen und Ingenieure bei der ESO hervor. Italien trat der ESO 1982 bei. Zu den wissenschaftlichen Entdeckungen, die von italienischen Astronomen geleitet wurden, gehören der erste Nachweis von Lithium in einem explodierenden Stern (eso1531) sowie die Entdeckung eines einzigartigen Relikts der frühen Milchstraße (eso1630). Im Bereich der technologischen Entwicklung wurde das VLT Survey Telescope (VST) vom astronomischen Observatorium der INAF in Capodimonte, Neapel, entwickelt (eso1119).
