De Melkweg ontmoeten
De weg naar het La Silla-observatorium van ESO in de Chileense Atacama-woestijn lijkt te buigen rond de berg, om zo te botsen met de neerwaartse helling van de Melkweg in deze Foto van de Week. Kleine gele lampen verlichten de weg regelmatig; het gebruik van koplampen is verboden op deze wegen in de schemering omdat zelfs gedimd licht de telescopische observaties kan verstoren. Dit gebied heeft daarom één van de donkerste nachthemels op aarde.
De duisternis, grote hoogte en de resulterende droge lucht maken van La Silla een uitstekende locatie voor astronomie. In de voorgrond van dit beeld presteert de Deense 1,54-meter telescoop zijn nachtelijke observaties. Zijn instrumenten laten astronomen toe om primeurs te realiseren. Bijvoorbeeld in 2005, toen astronomen de nagloeiers observeerden van korte gammaflitsen en toonden dat deze flitsen waarschijnlijk veroorzaakt worden door de dramatische botsing van twee neutronensterren, terwijl in 2006 de telescoop onderdeel was van een globaal netwerk van telescopen die een exoplaneet ontdekte die vijf keer groter is dan de aarde.
Een aantal interessante objecten vullen de hemel boven het observatorium. Aan de linkerkant, bijna verborgen door de telescoop, is de zwakke groene gloed van Komeet 252P/LINEAR te zien. Daarboven is de staart van het sterrenbeeld Schorpioen zichtbaar, die naar de gloeiende wolken van de Melkweg buigt, dicht bij Mars en Saturnus. Nog verder naar boven in de felle galactische boog zijn er twee felle sterren: de intrigerende drievoudige stelsels Alpha en Beta Centauri. Helemaal rechtsboven in het beeld schijnt de iconische diamant van het Zuiderkruis.
