Spaanse kroonprins bezoekt ESO’s Paranal-sterrenwacht

Op 24 november 2011 werd ESO’s Paranal-sterrenwacht in Chili vereert met een bezoek van Hunne Koninklijke Hoogheden de Prins en Prinses van Asturië.
De delegatie, waartoe ook de Spaanse minister van wetenschap en innovatie, Cristina Garmendia, en de Chileense minister van nationale middelen, Catalina Parot, behoorden, kreeg eerst de gelegenheid om een reeks presentaties over ESO en de Paranal Residencia bij te wonen. Bij deze sessie waren ook leden van de internationale pers aanwezig.
ESO’s algemeen directeur, Tim de Zeeuw, benadrukte de uitdagingen van het bouwen en in bedrijf houden van geavanceerde astronomische onderzoeksfaciliteiten op een van de droogste plaatsen op aarde.
‘Het is een groot genoegen om Hunne Koninklijke Hoogheden te verwelkomen op de Paranal-sterrenwacht,’ zei De Zeeuw. ‘Spanje is een zeer gewaardeerd ESO-lidstaat. De Spaanse industrie heeft belangrijke bijdragen geleverd aan het ontwerp en de bouw van ESO-faciliteiten, en Spaanse astronomen maken op indrukwekkende wijze gebruik van deze wetenschappelijke middelen van wereldklasse.’
Ook de Spaanse afgevaardigde en vice-voorzitter van de ESO-raad, Xavier Barcons, benadrukte de sterke betrokkenheid van de Spaanse gemeenschap bij ESO-activiteiten. Spanje heeft een significante rol bij de ontwerpstudies voor de toekomstige E-ELT en heeft ook grote contracten verworven bij de bouw van onderdelen van ALMA, de Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array.
De Spaanse astronoom en ESO’s plaatsvervangend directeur bedrijfsvoering, Fernando Comerón, beschreef enkele van de belangrijkste ontdekkingen die met ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) zijn gedaan, waaronder de eerste directe opname ooit van een exoplaneet en de bevestiging van het bestaan van een superzwaar zwart gat in het centrum van de Melkweg.
Vervolgens kregen de Prins en Prinses een rondleiding bij de VLT zelf – het meest geavanceerde optische instrument ter wereld. Ze kregen ook de unieke gelegenheid om de interferometrische tunnels onder de telescopen te bekijken. In deze tunnels worden de lichtbundels die door de unit-telescopen van de VLT worden verzameld gecombineerd, wat astronomen in staat stelt om details te zien die tot wel zeventien keer zo klein zijn als de details die met de afzonderlijke telescopen waarneembaar zijn.
De eminente gasten brachten ook een bezoek aan de controleruimte van de VLT, waar Spaanse ESO-astronomen de werking van de telescopen toelichtten.
Bij het bezoek van de Prins en Prinses van Asturië traden ook de ESO-vertegenwoordiger in Chili, Massimo Tarenghi, en de directeur van de sterrenwacht, Andreas Kaufer, als gastheer op.
Spanje is sinds 2006 lid van ESO, dat momenteel 32 Spaanse staatsburgers in dienst heeft.

ESO, de Europese Zuidelijke Sterrenwacht, is de belangrijkste intergouvernementele sterrenkundeorganisatie in Europa, en het meest productieve astronomische observatorium ter wereld. Zij wordt ondersteund door vijftien landen: België, Brazilië, Denemarken, Duitsland, Finland, Frankrijk, Italië, Nederland, Oostenrijk, Portugal, Spanje, Tsjechië, het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Zweden en Zwitserland. ESO voert een ambitieus programma uit, gericht op het ontwerp, de bouw en het beheer van krachtige grondobservatoria die astronomen in staat stellen om belangrijke wetenschappelijke ontdekkingen te doen. ESO speelt ook een leidende rol bij het bevorderen en organiseren van samenwerking op sterrenkundig gebied. ESO beheert drie waarnemingslocaties van wereldklasse in Chili: La Silla, Paranal en Chajnantor. Op Paranal staan ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT), de meest geavanceerde optische sterrenwacht ter wereld, en twee surveytelescopen: VISTA werkt in het infrarood en is de grootste surveytelescoop ter wereld en de VLT Survey Telescope is de grootste telescoop die uitsluitend is ontworpen om de hemel in zichtbaar licht in kaart te brengen. Ook is ESO de Europese partner van de revolutionaire telescoop ALMA, het grootste sterrenkundige project van dit moment. Daarnaast bereidt ESO momenteel de bouw voor van de Europese Extremely Large optische/nabij-infrarood Telescope (E-ELT), een telescoop van de 40-meterklasse die ‘het grootste oog op de hemel’ ter wereld zal worden.
