Driehoekstelsel gekiekt door VST

De VLT Survey Telescope (VST) van de ESO-sterrenwacht op Paranal, Chili, heeft een indrukwekkend detailrijke opname gemaakt van het sterrenstelsel M33. Dit nabije spiraalstelsel, het op een na grootste buurstelsel van onze Melkweg, wemelt van de heldere sterrenhopen en wolken van gas en stof. De nieuwe foto – een van de meeste gedetailleerde groothoekopnamen die ooit van dit object zijn gemaakt – laat vooral de vele gloeiende rode gaswolken in de spiraalarmen duidelijk zien.
Messier 33, tevens bekend als NGC 598, staat op een afstand van ongeveer drie miljoen lichtjaar in het kleine noordelijke sterrenbeeld Driehoek. Het vaak ook Driehoekstelsel genoemde object werd in augustus 1764 waargenomen door de Franse kometenjager Charles Messier, die het als nummer 33 toevoegde aan zijn beroemde lijst van opvallende nevels en sterrenhopen. Maar Messier was niet de eerste die het spiraalstelsel opmerkte: al ongeveer honderd jaar vóór hem is het – waarschijnlijk voor het eerst – gedocumenteerd door de Siciliaanse astronoom Giovanni Battista Hodierna.
Hoewel het Driehoekstelsel aan de noordelijke hemel staat, is het vanuit de zuidelijke positie van de ESO-sterrenwacht op Paranal nét waarneembaar, zij het laag aan de hemel. Deze foto is gemaakt met de VLT Survey Telescope (VST), een geavanceerde 2,6-meter surveytelescoop met een beeldveld dat twee keer zo breed is als de volle maan. De foto is opgebouwd uit vele afzonderlijke opnamen, waarvan sommige zijn gemaakt door een filter dat alleen het licht van gloeiend waterstofgas doorlaat. Dat heeft er voor gezorgd dat de rode gaswolken in de spiraalarmen van het stelsel zo opvallend zijn.
Tussen de vele stervormingsgebieden in de spiraalarmen van M33 valt vooral de grote nevel NGC 604 op. Met een diameter van bijna 1500 lichtjaar is dit een van de grootste nabije emissienevels die we kennen. Hij strekt zich uit over een oppervlak dat veertig keer zo groot is als het zichtbare deel van de veel bekendere – en veel nabijere – Orionnevel.
Het Driehoekstelsel is het op twee na grootste lid van de Lokale Groep van sterrenstelsels, waartoe naast de Melkweg en het Andromedastelsel nog ongeveer vijftig kleinere stelsels behoren. Tijdens extreem heldere, donkere nachten is het stelsel net met het blote oog te zien. Daarmee is dit het verste hemelobject dat waarneembaar is zonder optische hulpmiddelen. En de zichtbaarheid ervan zal de komende tijd alleen maar verbeteren: het Driehoekstelsel komt met een snelheid van ongeveer 100.000 kilometer per uur op ons af!
Een nadere blik op deze schitterende nieuwe foto maakt niet alleen een zeer gedetailleerde inspectie van de sterren-producerende spiraalarmen van het stelsel mogelijk, maar onthult ook het zeer rijke landschap van verder weg gelegen sterrenstelsels dat schuilgaat achter de talloze sterren en gloeiende wolken van NGC 598.

ESO is ook de Europese partner van de revolutionaire telescoop ALMA, het grootste astronomische project van dit moment. Daarnaast bereidt ESO momenteel de bouw voor van de 39-meter Europese Extremely Large optical/near-infrared Telescope (E-ELT), die ‘het grootste oog op de hemel’ ter wereld zal worden.
