Astrónomo do ESO recebe Prémio Sparlamento de Investigação e Desenvolvimento 2019

O astrónomo do ESO Paolo Padovani recebeu o “Prémio Sparlamento de Investigação e Desenvolvimento 2019” pela sua contribuição no desenvolvimento da excelência italiana em astronomia. A cerimónia decorreu a 5 de Julho de 2019 no Parlamento Italiano em Roma, tendo sido a primeira vez que uma cerimónia astronómica decorreu neste edifício.
Paolo Padovani está a estudar Núcleos Galácticos Ativos (AGN) com dados que cobrem todo o espectro electromagnético e trabalha em rastreios profundos de rádio e astronomia de neutrinos. Durante os seus primeiros anos no ESO, Padovani liderou a participação desta organização no Observatório Virtual e desde 2011 trabalha no Gabinete Científico do ELT na Diretoria de Ciência.
A cerimónia de entrega deste novo prémio organizada pelo Sparlamento incluiu uma apresentação de Padovani sobre o ESO e o Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), na qual foi destacada a influência da Itália, e uma lectio magistralis sobre “Neutrinos emitidos por buracos negros supermassivos: uma nova janela no Universo”, relacionada com a descoberta de uma fonte distante de neutrinos de alta energia.
Quando estiver construído, o ELT será “o maior olho do mundo virado para o céu” e investigará os maiores desafios astronómicos da nossa época. Tanto a indústria como os astrónomos italianos estão a contribuir para o desenvolvimento do ELT. Por exemplo, o maior contrato alguma vez assinado para a astronomia terrestre que construirá a Cúpula e a Estrutura do ELT foi atribuído a uma empresa italiana (eso1617), enquanto o Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF), em conjunto com a França e o ESO, lidera o projeto MAORY (Multi-conjugate Adaptive Optics RelaY) — um novo módulo de óptica adaptativa para o ELT (ann15093). Adicionalmente, o contrato para o quarto espelho adaptativo (M4) do ELT foi atribuído ao consórcio AdOptica, composto por duas empresas italianas, a ADS International e a Microgate (ann15045).
Durante a cerimónia de entrega do prémio, houve também uma mesa redonda sobre “O futuro da Astronomia italiana no contexto internacional: o papel do governo no apoio à investigação astronómica italiana”. Participaram nesta mesa redonda vários convidados, entre eles Nichi D’Amico, Presidente do Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica (INAF), Ginevra Trinchieri, Presidente da Sociedade Astronómica italiana, Gianpietro Marchiori, Presidente Executivo do Grupo de Engenharia Industrial Europeia, Cristina DelTutto, Directora do Sparlamento e Marco Bella, Membro do Parlamento italiano.
Este prémio constitui não apenas um reconhecimento bem merecido à contribuição de Paolo Padovani mas destaca ainda uma longa história de sucesso do trabalho pioneiro levado a cabo por astrónomos e engenheiros italianos a trabalhar no ESO. A Itália aderiu ao ESO em 1982. Descobertas científicas lideradas por astrónomos italianos incluem a primeira deteção de lítio numa estrela em explosão (eso1531) e a descoberta de uma rara relíquia fóssil da Via Láctea primordial (eso1630). No campo do desenvolvimento tecnológico, o Telescópio de Rastreio do VLT (VST) foi concebido pelo Observatório Astronómico di Capodimonte do INAF, em Nápoles (eso1119).
