Der ELT-Spektrograf HARMONI besteht das Preliminary Design Review
Hochmodernes Instrument besteht wichtige Tests und erhält ein leistungsstarkes adaptives Optiksystem

HARMONI, eines der First-Light-Instrumente für das Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), hat den Preliminary Design Review Prozess (PDR) erfolgreich abgeschlossen. In einer Woche intensiver Diskussionen mit dem HARMONI-Konsortium Ende 2017 untersuchten ESO- und Community-Experten, ob das Instrument die sehr ambitionierten wissenschaftlichen Ziele erreichen könnte. Sie bewerteten das Design der Optik, Mechanik, Software und Elektronik sowie die Betriebskonzepte des Geräts und identifizierten dabei einige technische Aspekte, die weitere Arbeiten erforderten. Das HARMONI-Team hat seitdem alle im Review identifizierten Aufgaben erfüllt, womit das Instrument nun offiziell das PDR bestanden hat. Nach Abschluss dieses wichtigen Schrittes kann das Instrument in die Phase der Detailplanung übergehen, um für die Beobachtungen bereit zu sein, wenn das ELT in Betrieb genommen wird.
Neben diesem wichtigen Meilenstein wird HARMONI auch ein leistungsfähiges neues adaptives Optiksystem erhalten. Der ESO-Rat gab kürzlich grünes Licht für die weitere Entwicklung des Laser Tomographic Adaptive Optics (LTAO) Systems für HARMONI. Das LTAO wurde ursprünglich auf eine spätere Phase des Teleskopprojekts verschoben. Aufgrund seiner Bedeutung für HARMONI und die wissenschaftlichen Ziele des ELT sowie der Verfügbarkeit zusätzlicher Mittel von ESO und dem HARMONI-Konsortium kann die ESO die Arbeiten an diesem Modul fortsetzen. Das LTAO-System wird die Laserleitsterne des ELT nutzen, damit HARMONI ultra-scharfe Bilder von astronomischen Objekten überall am Himmel aufnehmen kann.
HARMONI (für High Angular Resolution Monolithic Optical and Near-infrared Integral field spectrograph) wird das Arbeitspferd des ELT für die visuelle und Nahinfrarotspektroskopie sein. Es handelt sich um einen integralen Feldspektrograf, der gleichzeitig Spektren an 30 000 benachbarten Punkten am Himmel erfasst, um ein astronomisches Objekt über einen weiten Wellenlängenbereich abzubilden. Es ist eines der ersten in einer neuen Klasse von riesigen astronomischen Instrumenten – HARMONI wird beeindruckende 8 Meter hoch, 10 Meter lang und 6 Meter breit sein und mächtige 40 Tonnen wiegen.
Das Design von HARMONI macht die Kalibrierung und den Betrieb einfach und bietet dem ELT spektroskopische Fähigkeiten, die ideal geeignet sind, das wissenschaftliche Potenzial des Teleskops in seinen ersten Jahren voll auszuschöpfen. HARMONI ist Teil der First-Light-Instrumentsuite, die auch die Bildgebung mit MICADO/MAORY und die Mid-Infrarot-Funktionen mit METIS umfasst.

Das HARMONI-Konsortium besteht aus sechs Hauptpartnern und einer Reihe von assoziierten Instituten. Hauptpartner sind die Universität Oxford (UK), das britische Astronomie-Technologiezentrum (UK) des Science and Technology Facilities Council, das Centre de Recherche Astrophysique de Lyon (Frankreich), das Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille (Frankreich), das Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (Spanien), das Centro de Astrobiologia (CSIC - INTA) (Spanien) und ESO. Die Durham University (UK), derzeit Associate, wird in Kürze ein vollwertiger Partner werden. Weitere assoziierte Institutionen sind: das Office National d'Etudes et de Recherches Aérospatiales (Frankreich), L'Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planétologie (Frankreich), Science and Technology Facilities Council's RAL Space (Großbritannien) und L'Institut de Planétologie et d'Astrophysique de Grenoble (IPAG).
