Espectrógrafo HARMONI do ELT passa revisão de design preliminar
Instrumento de vanguarda passa testes críticos e ganha poderoso sistema de óptica adaptativa

O HARMONI, um dos instrumentos de primeira luz para o Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), acaba de completar com sucesso o processo de Revisão de Design Preliminar. Durante uma semana de intensos debates com o consórcio HARMONI no final de 2017, o ESO e a comunidade de especialistas verificaram se o instrumento poderia atingir os seus ambiciosos objetivos científicos. Foi inspeccionado o design da óptica, mecânica, software e electrónica do instrumento, assim como os seus conceitos operacionais — neste processo foram identificados algumas questões técnicas que necessitavam de ser mais trabalhadas. A equipa HARMONI completou desde essa altura todas as tarefas identificadas na Revisão e o instrumento passou agora formalmente a sua Revisão de Design Preliminar. Ao completar este passo crucial, o HARMONI pode agora passar à fase de design detalhado, preparando-se para fazer observações de vanguarda quando o ELT vir a sua primeira luz.
Para além de ter passado este importante marco, o HARMONI irá também dispôr de um novo sistema de óptica adaptativa poderoso. O Conselho do ESO deu recentemente luz verde para se continuar a desenvolver o sistema LTAO (Laser Tomographic Adaptive Optics) para o HARMONI. O LTAO tinha sido originalmente adiado para uma fase posterior do projeto do telescópio, no entanto, dada a importância do HARMONI e os objetivos científicos do ELT, juntamente com a disponibilidade de fundos adicionais do ELT e do consórcio HARMONI, o ESO foi autorizado a continuar com este módulo. O sistema LTAO fará uso das estrelas guia laser do ELT, permitindo ao HARMONI capturar imagens extremamente nítidas de objetos astronómicos em qualquer ponto do céu.
O HARMONI — High Angular Resolution Monolithic Optical and Near-infrared Integral field spectrograph — será o principal instrumento do ELT para a espectroscopia feita no visível e infravermelho próximo. Trata-se de um espectrógrafo de campo integral que poderá adquirir simultaneamente espectros de 30 000 pontos adjacentes no céu no intuito de mapear um objeto astronómico ao longo de um grande intervalo de comprimentos de onda. É um dos primeiros de uma nova classe de enormes instrumentos astronómicos — o HARMONI terá uns impressionantes 8 metros de altura, 10 metros de comprimento e 6 metros de largura e pesará cerca de 40 toneladas.
O design do HARMONI faz com que a sua calibração e operação sejam tarefas fáceis, dando ao ELT capacidades espectroscópicas tão simples como “apontar e observar”, ideais para explorar completamente o potencial científico do telescópio durante os seus primeiros anos de operação. O HARMONI faz parte do complemento de instrumentos de primeira luz, que cobre igualmente o poder de imagem com o MICADO/MAORY e capacidades no infravermelho médio com o METIS.

O Consórcio HARMONI é constituído por seis parceiros e um número de institutos associados. Os parceiros principais são a University of Oxford (RU), o Science and Technology Facilities Council’s UK Astronomy Technology Centre (RU), o Centre de Recherche Astrophysique de Lyon (França), o Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille (França), o Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (Espanha), o Centro de Astrobiologia (CSIC - INTA) (Espanha) e o ESO. A Durham University (RU), atualmente uma associada, tornar-se-á proximamente um parceiro principal. Outras instituições associadas são: o Office National d'Etudes et de Recherches Aérospatiales (França); L'Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planétologie (França); e L’Institut de Planétologie et d’Astrophysique de Grenoble (IPAG).
