Havmågetågens vinger

Dette nye billede fra ESO viser et udsnit af en sky af støv og glødende gas, der kaldes Havmågetågen. Disse tjavsede røde skyer danner en del af himmelfuglens ”vinger” og billedet afslører en fascinerende blanding af mørke og glødende røde skyer indvævet imellem klare stjerner. Dette nye billede er taget af Wide Field Imager på MPG/ESO 2,2 meter-teleskopet på ESOs La Silla-observatorium i Chile.

Løbende langs grænsen imellem stjernebillederne Canis Major (Store hund) og Monoceros (Enhjørningen) på den sydlige nattehimmel, er Havmågetågen en kæmpe sky der mest består af brintgas. Den er et eksempel på det astronomer kalder et HII-område. Varme nye stjerner dannes inde i disse skyer og deres intense ultraviolette stråling får den omkringliggende gas til at gløde.

Den rødlige nuance i dette billede afslører tilstedeværelsen af ioniseret brint [1]. Havmågetågen, der mere formelt er kendt som IC 2177, er et komplekst objekt med en fugleagtig form, der består af tre store gasskyer – Sharpless 2-292 (eso1237) udgør ”hovedet”, dette nye billede viser den del af Sharpless 2-296, der udgør de store ”vinger” og Sharpless 2-297 er en lille knudret tilføjelse på spidsen af mågens højre ”vinge”[2].

Disse objekter er alle med i Sharpless stjernetåge-kataloget, der er en liste med over 300 glødende skyer af gas udarbejdet af den amerikanske astronom Steward Sharpless i 1950’erne. Før han udgav dette katalog, var Sharpless ph.d.-studerende på Yerkes-observatoriet i nærheden af Chicago i USA, hvor han og hans kollegaer offentliggjorde observationer, der hjalp med at vise, at Mælkevejen er en spiralgalakse med enorme buede arme.

Spiralgalakser kan indeholde tusinder af HII-områder, der næsten alle er koncentrerede langs deres spiralarme. Havmågetågen ligger i en af Mælkevejens spiralarme. Men det er dog ikke tilfældet for alle galakser. Irregulære galakser indeholder HII-områder, med de er rodet fordelt overalt i galaksen og elliptiske galakser er igen anderledes – de ser ud til helt at mangle disse områder. Tilstedeværelsen af HII-områder peger på at aktiv stjernedannelse stadigvæk finder sted i en galakse.

Dette billede af Sharpless 2-296 er taget med Wide Field Imager (WFI), der er et stort kamera monteret på MPG/ESO 2,2 meter-teleskopet på ESOs La Silla-observatorium i Chile. Det viser kun en lille del af tågen, der er en stor sky med en voldsom produktion af varme stjerner i sit indre. Billedet viser Sharpless 2-296, der oplyses af flere særligt klare unge stjerner – der er mange andre stjerner spredt ud over hele området, herunder en der er så klar, at den skiller sig ud som mågens ”øje” i billeder af hele komplekset.

Vidvinkelbilleder af dette område af himlen viser en mangfoldighed af interessante astronomiske objekter. De unge klare stjerner inde i skyen er en del af det nærtliggende stjernedannende område CMa R1 i stjernebilledet Canis Major, der er fyldt med klare stjerner og stjernehobe. Tæt ved Havmågetågen ligger også stjernetågen Thors Hjelm, et objekt der blev optaget med ESOs Very Large Telescope (VLT) på dagen for ESOs 50 års jubilæum, den 5 oktober 2012 med hjælp fra Brigitte Bailleul – vinderen af konkurrencen Tweet din vej til VLT! (eso1238a).

[1] Astronomer bruger udtrykket HII for at beskrive ioniseret brint, og HI for atomar brint. Et brintatom består af en elektron bundet til en proton, men i en ioniseret gas er atomerne delt op i frie elektroner og positive ioner, i dette tilfælde kun enkelte protoner.

[2] I den astronomiske database SIMBAD kaldes disse objekter officielt for henholdsvis Sh 2-292, Sh 2-296 og Sh 2-297.

ESO planlægger i øjeblikket et 39 meter optisk/nær-infrarødt teleskop kaldet European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), der vil blive ”verdens største øje mod himlen”.
