Riccardo Giacconi (1931–2018)
"Röntgentähtitieteen isä" ja taannoinen ESO:n pääjohtaja, jonka johti ESO:n VLT-teleskoopin menestykseen, on kuollut

ESO:n viides pääjohtaja, Riccardo Giacconi, menehtyi sunnuntaina 9.12.2018 87 vuoden iässä.
Riccardo Giacconi johti ESO:a vuodesta 1993 vuoteen 1999, organisaation historian ratkaisevana aikana. ESO rakensi nykyistä lippulaivalaitteistoaan, VLT-teleskooppia (Very Large Telescope) Cerro Paranalille ja aloitti kumppanuuden, joka johti ALMA-järjestelmään (Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array). Näiden vuosien onnistumiset ja erityisesti VLT-teleskoopin rakentaminen johtivat ESO:n tielle, joka johti sen nykyiseen asemaan maailman johtavana tähtitieteellisenä organisaationa.
Riccardo Giacconi syntyi Italian Genovassa 6.10.1931. Hän suoritti fysiikan tutkinnon sekä tohtorin tutkintonsa Milanon yliopistosta. Vuonna 1956, kaksi vuotta tohtorin tutkintonsa jälkeen, Giacconi muutti Indianan yliopistoon Yhdysvaltoihin ja sitten Princetonin yliopistoon Yhdysvalloissa työskennelläkseen Princetonin kosmisen säteilyn laboratoriossa.
Princetonin jälkeen Giacconi aloitti työn, josta hänet nimettiin "röntgentähtitieteen isäksi". American Science and Engineering värväsi hänet aloittamaan avaruustiedeohjelman ja Giacconi päätti, että ohjelman tulisi keskittyä tekemään havaintoja röntgenaallonpituuksilla. Tämä päätös merkitsi käytännössä röntgentähtitieteen alkua. Vuonna 1962 hän ja hänen ryhmänsä havaitsivat ensimmäisen aurinkokunnan ulkopuolisen röntgenlähteen Scorpius X-1 sekä kosmisen röntgentaustasäteilyn.
"Olen itse röntgentähtitieteilijä ja Riccardo Giacconi tutkimuksineen valottivat yli kolmea vuosikymmentä uraani, kauan ennen kuin tulin ESO:on," kommentoi Xavier Barcons, ESO:n nykyinen pääjohtaja. "Minulle on suuri kunnia olla yksi hänen seuraajistaan pääjohtajana, järjestössä, jota hän muokkasi suuresti."
Giacconin toimiessa ESO:n pääjohtajana hän teki ESO:n organisaatioon merkittäviä muutoksia, jotka olivat olennaisia VLT-teleskoopin menestyksen kannalta. Hänen uudenaikaiset johtamismenetelmänsä sopivat erityisen hyvin suuriin hankkeisiin ja edistivät laajempaa yhteistyötä ESO:n ja Chilen välillä. Hänen johtajuutensa ansiosta ESO kykeni ylittämään merkittäviä teknisiä ja taloudellisia vaikeuksia VLT:n rakentamisessa ja kaksi neljästä yksikköteleskoopista saivat ensivalonsa hänen toimikautensa lopulla.
Pääjohtajuutensa aikana hän myös valvoi La Sillan jatkokehitystä. Hänen tuellaan NTT-teleskooppia (New Technology Telescope) paranneltiin. NTT rikkoi uusia rajoja teleskooppien insinööritaidon ja suunnittelun osalta sekä oli maailman ensimmäinen, jossa oli tietokoneohjattu pääpeili.
Jättäessään ESO:n hän palasi Yhdysvaltoihin Associated Universities Incorporated (AUI) -järjestön pääjohtajana vuonna 2002. Hän sai Nobelin fysiikanpalkinnon vuonna 2002 "uraauurtavasta astrofysiikan alalla tekemästään panoksesta, joka johti kosmisten röntgenlähteiden löytämiseen."
Riccardo Giacconi panos pääjohtajana auttoi muokkaamaan ESO:n maailman johtavaksi järjestöksi ja hänen johtajuutensa muistetaan olennaisena ESO:n jatkuvan menestyksen kannalta.
