Avviso ai media: la cerimonia di posa della prima pietra dell’Extremely Large Telescope

I rappresentanti dei media sono invitati a partecipare alla cerimonia di posa della prima pietra dell’ELT (Extremely Large Telescope), che si terrà venerdì 26 maggio 2017 sul Cerro Armazones, una vetta di 3046 metri nel Nord del Cile, a circa 20 km dall’Osservatorio del Paranal dell’ESO. La cerimonia inizierà alle 13:30 (ora locale), finirà intorno alle 15:30 e segnerà anche la connessione dell’osservatorio alla rete elettrica. La prima pietra sarà posata dal Presidente della Repubblica del Cile Michelle Bachelet Jeria.
I media avranno non solo l’opportunità di visitare lo spettacolare sito dell'ELT, ma anche di organizzare interviste sia con alti funzionari delle autorità cilene sia con gli imprenditori, gli scienziati e gli ingegneri coinvolti nella costruzione di questo telescopio gigante.
L’ELT è un nuovo telescopio terrestre rivoluzionario che sarà dotato di uno specchio principale di 39 metri: ciò lo renderà il telescopio ottico/vicino-infrarosso più grande al mondo. Affronterà alcune tra le sfide astronomiche più importanti dei nostri giorni, come scoprire e studiare gli esopianeti simili alla Terra, osservare le prime stelle e le galassie per esplorare le nostre origini e indagare sulla natura della materia oscura e dell'energia oscura.
Un anno fa, l’ESO ha firmato un contratto per la costruzione della cupola dell’ELT e della struttura del telescopio con l’ACe Consortium, formato da Astaldi, Cimolai e il subappaltatore EIE Group. Si tratta del più grande contratto mai stipulato dall’ESO, nonché del più grande in assoluto per l’astronomia da terra.
L’ELT è soltanto l’ultimo dei tanti progetti dell’ESO che hanno ampiamente beneficiato, da più di mezzo secolo a questa parte, del contributo continuo del Governo dello Stato ospitante del Cile. Il valido supporto del Ministero degli Affari Esteri, del Ministero dell’Energia (Minenenergia) e della Commissione Nazionale per l’Energia (CNE) è stato fondamentale di recente per stabilire la connessione del sito alla rete elettrica. Il sito dell’ELT è stato donato dal Governo del Cile ed è circondato da un'ulteriore ampia concessione di terreno per proteggere le future operazioni del telescopio da qualsiasi forma di interferenza.
I lavori di costruzione nell’area dell’ELT sono iniziati nel mese di giugno del 2014 e, ora che la strada di accesso e il livellamento della sommità sono stati completati, si può dare il via ai lavori sulla cupola. La prima luce dell'ELT è prevista per il 2024.
Per partecipare alla cerimonia, i rappresentanti dei media sono pregati di registrarsi qui e di organizzare il proprio viaggio in modo da arrivare all’aeroporto di Antofagasta la mattina del 26 maggio.

L'ESO è la principale organizzazione intergovernativa di Astronomia in Europa e l'osservatorio astronomico da terra più produttivo al mondo. È sostenuto da 16 Paesi: Austria, Belgio, Brasile, Danimarca, Finlandia, Francia, Germania, Gran Bretagna, Italia, Olanda, Polonia, Portogallo, Repubblica Ceca, Spagna, Svezia, e Svizzera e dallo Stato ospitante del Cile. Sul Paranal, gestisce il Very Large Telescope, l’osservatorio astronomico più all'avanguardia nella banda visibile, e due telescopi per survey. VISTA, il più grande telescopio per survey al mondo, lavora nella banda infrarossa, mentre il VLT Survey Telescope è il più grande telescopio progettato appositamente per produrre survey del cielo in luce visibile. L'ESO è il partner principale di ALMA, il più grande progetto astronomico esistente. E sul Cerro Armazones, l'ESO sta costruendo il l'Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) da 39 metri, che diventerà "il più grande occhio del mondo rivolto al cielo".
