M1 cell elevator, Dec2005
When the main mirror (M1) is removed from the telescope, the whole cell holding the mirror has to be lowered from the observing floor onto a truck waiting on the platform. This is the role of the giant elevator visible here. A large crew is required for this delicate operation.
