Extended auxiliary observing at Paranal

This panorama, extended to 360 x 180 degrees (with black), shows the sites of the ESO-operated Very Large Telescope (VLT). The VLT is based at the Cerro Paranal site in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. It is the world's most advanced optical instrument, consisting of four Unit Telescopes (UTs) with main mirror diametres of 8.2m each, and four smaller Auxiliary Telescopes (ATs) of 1.8m. In this extended image, an AT can be seen in the foreground, open and observing, with some UTs in the background, all against the stunning background of our home galaxy.
