The Overwhelmingly Large Telescope

The conceptual next step beyond the Extremely Large Telescope is the OverWhelmingly Large (OWL) Telescope. In this computer generated image, the 100-metre main mirror, almost three times larger than the ELT’s main mirror, can be seen in the open. Unlike the ELT, OWL would operate in open air and would be covered by a sliding enclosure when not in use. Additionally, the handling system for the secondary mirror is visible inside the retracted, partially open enclosure.
