Future site of the ELT
This aerial view of the mountain Cerro Armazones shows the site where ESO's Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) will be built. The levelling of the top was completed in 2015 in preparation for the ELT, which will be the largest optical telescope in the world: the world's biggest eye on the sky. The ELT's design includes a main mirror 39 metres in diameter, constructed from 798 hexagonal segments. The ELT is a truly epic project that has the potential to revolutionise our perception of the Universe as much as Galileo's telescope did 400 years ago.
