ALMA transforming our understanding of the cold Universe

This image shows antennas which make up part of the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array (ALMA). ALMA will be composed initially of 66 such high precision antennas located on the Chajnantor plateau, 5000 metres altitude in northern Chile. It will enable transformational research into the physics of the cold Universe, probe the first stars and galaxies, and directly image the formation of planets.
