View of the eye on the sky
The public enjoy an artist's impression of the up and coming Extremely Large Telescope at the ESO 2017 Open House Day that was held on Saturday 21 October. The image shows the ELT in situ at its home in Cerro Armazones, Chile. The true ELT, set to receive first light in 2024, will house an array of 798 hexagonal mirror segements making up a 39-metre primary mirror. The entire ELT structure will be comparable in size to the Allianz Arena.
