Paranal liquid nitrogen facility

Detection instruments for the suite of telescopes at ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile must be kept quite cold to function effectively. Liquid nitrogen does the trick. This image shows the facility where the supercold gas is stored. The levels in the detectors are checked most days, and when the coolant is running low, observatory staff come here to refill the tanks. This image was obtained in March 2009.
