Rendering of the 39-metre mirror

The Extremely Large Telescope’s main mirror is composed of 798 individual segments, which operate together to produce a single, extremely large mirror. In this rendering of the main mirror, the segments appear to be joined together, however when complete, the spacing between the 1.4 m wide segments will be just 4 mm.
