Desert dishes
This fulldome drone footage shows the giant dishes of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) from several perspectives. ALMA comprises 66 giant dishes, each one 7 or 12 metres in diameter and receptive to a range of radio wavelengths. Two custom-built vehicles known as the ALMA transporters can pick up, move and reposition the 100-tonne dishes with millimetric precision. This ability to rearrange the dishes on their home, the breathtaking Chajnantor Plateau, gives the array a powerful zoom feature. ALMA is a global partnership, and the most powerful astronomical observatory of its kind.
