The ESO Data Flow System

Michèle Peron (ESO)

Abstract

The Data Flow System (DFS) was originally developed for supporting the end-to-end operation of the VLT. It is a distributed system composed of a collection of components for preparation and scheduling of observations, archiving of data, pipeline data reduction and quality control. The system has evolved together with the operation model of the La Silla-Paranal Observatory and we expect it to change further to accommodate new VLT instruments as well as the E-ELT and to support new computing technologies.

The current system, its evolution since the beginning of operations in 1999 and future developments towards the construction and commissioning of the E-ELT are presented in this paper.
