Lodewijk Woltjer (1930–2019)

Der dienstälteste Generaldirektor der ESO, Lodewijk Woltjer, ist am Sonntag, den 25. August 2019, im Alter von 89 Jahren verstorben.
Lodewijk Woltjer, der vielen als Lo bekannt ist, war von 1975 bis 1987 der dritte und am längsten amtierende Generaldirektor der ESO. Er hatte schon eine starke Vision für die Zukunft der ESO, bevor er überhaupt die Position des Generaldirektors antrat, und eine der bedeutendsten Prägungen, die er bei der ESO hinterließ, war die Gründung einer Wissenschaftsgruppe, die die ESO von einem rein funktionalen Observatorium in eine aktive wissenschaftliche Forschungsorganisation verwandelte.
Zusätzlich zu dieser grundlegenden Verlagerung und Ausweitung der Arbeit der ESO, hat Prof. Woltjer während seiner Amtszeit viele wichtige Entwicklungen überwacht. Dazu gehörten die Einweihung der Garchinger Zentrale und die Aufnahme von zwei neuen Mitgliedstaaten, Italien und der Schweiz, im Jahr 1982. Mit dem Direktor des Max-Planck-Instituts für Astronomie (MPIA) unterzeichnete er eine Vereinbarung über die Installation des heutigen MPG/ESO 2,2-Meter-Teleskops auf La Silla und beaufsichtigte den Entwurf und die frühen Bauphasen des New Technology Telescope (NTT), das ein entscheidender Vorläufer des Very Large Telescope (VLT) war. Woltjer stärkte auch die Beziehungen der ESO zu anderen Organisationen, einschließlich der Unterzeichnung des Abkommens mit der Europäischen Weltraumorganisation für die Europäische Koordinierungsstelle für Weltraumteleskope, die bei der ESO in Garching eingerichtet wurde. Kurz vor dem Ende seiner Zeit als Generaldirektor erhielt er vom ESO-Rat die Genehmigung für den Bau des VLT, und er plädierte sehr für den Paranal als optimalen Standort.
Lodewijk Woltjer wurde am 26. April 1930 in Noordwijk, Niederlande, als Sohn des Astronomen Jan Woltjer geboren. Er studierte an der Universität Leiden und promovierte bei Jan Oort. 1957 promovierte er mit einer Arbeit über die Magnetfeldstruktur des Krebsnebels. Nach seiner Promotion forschte Woltjer weiter an theoretischer Astrophysik und Plasmaphysik und untersuchte Quasare, Supernova-Überreste und Magnetfelder in Sternen und Galaxien. Er erhielt zwei Postdoktorandenstellen an Universitäten in den USA und kehrte 1959 als Dozent für Astronomie an die Universität Leiden zurück. Zwei Jahre später wurde er Professor für theoretische Astrophysik und Plasmaphysik und hatte diese Position bis 1964 inne. Von 1964 bis 1974 arbeitete Woltjer an der Columbia University in New York, zunächst als Leiter der Astronomie-Abteilung, dann als Rutherford Professor of Astronomy.
Nach seiner Zeit bei der ESO blieb Woltjer in der Astronomie aktiv und war von 1994 bis 1997 drei Jahre lang Präsident der Internationalen Astronomischen Union. Auch war er in zahlreichen Ausschüssen, Kommissionen und Abteilungen der IAU tätig und arbeitete in der Haute-Provence und in Arcetri Observatorien.
Lodewijk Woltjer wird für seine entschlossene Leitung der ESO in Erinnerung bleiben, die die Grundlage für das VLT bildete – unser heutiges Flaggschiff-Teleskop. Nachdem er die ESO verlassen hatte, hielt er seine Verbindungen zur Organisation aufrecht und besuchte bei mehreren Gelegenheiten die Observatorien in Chile. Gerade erst 2017, im Alter von 87 Jahren, reiste Woltjer nach Chile, um an der Grundsteinlegung für das Extremly Large Telescope, das zukünftige Flaggschiff der ESO, teilzunehmen.
