Eerste segmenten van hoofdspiegel ELT met succes gegoten

De eerste zes zeshoekige segmenten voor de hoofdspiegel van ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) zijn met succes door het Duitse bedrijf SCHOTT in hun fabriek in Mainz gegoten. Deze segmenten zullen deel uitmaken van de 39-meter hoofdspiegel van de ELT, die uiteindelijk uit 798 segmenten zal bestaan. Wanneer hij in 2024 zijn eerste licht opvangt, zal de ELT de grootste optische telescoop ter wereld zijn.
Met een middellijn van 39 meter zal de hoofdspiegel van de Extremely Large Telescope van ESO veruit de grootste zijn die ooit voor een optische/infraroodtelescoop is gemaakt. Zo’n kolos is veel te groot om uit één stuk glas te worden gemaakt. Daarom zal hij bestaan uit 798 afzonderlijke zeshoekige segmenten die elk 1,4 meter breed zijn en ongeveer vijf centimeter dik. Deze segmenten zullen samenwerken als één enorme spiegel die tientallen miljoenen keren zoveel licht kan verzamelen als het menselijk oog.
Marc Cayrel, hoofd ELT-optomechanica bij ESO, was bij de eerste gietingen aanwezig: ‘Het was een geweldig gevoel om de eerste segmenten met succes gegoten te zien worden. Dit is een belangrijke mijlpaal voor de ELT!’
Net als de secundaire spiegel van de telescoop zijn de segmenten van de hoofdspiegel van de ELT gemaakt van Zerodur©, keramisch materiaal van de firma SCHOTT [1] dat een lage uitzettingscoëfficiënt heeft. ESO heeft dit Duitse bedrijf de contracten gegund voor de fabricage van de eerste vier ELT-spiegels (bekend als M1 tot M4, waarbij M1 de hoofdspiegel is) (eso1704).
De eerste segmenten die nu zijn gegoten zijn van belang omdat ze de ingenieurs van SCHOTT in staat stellen om het productieproces en de bijbehorende gereedschappen en procedures te valideren en te optimaliseren.
Het gieten van de eerste zes segmenten is een belangrijke mijlpaal, maar er is nog een lange weg te gaan. In totaal moeten er meer dan 900 segmenten worden gegoten en gepolijst (798 voor de hoofdspiegel zelf, plus een reserveset van 133). Zodra de fabriek op volle toeren draait, zal ongeveer één segment per dag worden geproduceerd.
Na het gieten zullen de spiegelsegmenten een langzame afkoel- en warmtebehandelingsprocedure doorlopen, in de juiste vorm worden geslepen en vervolgens tot op 15 nanometer nauwkeurig worden gepolijst. Het slijpen en polijsten zal worden gedaan door het Franse bedrijf Safran Reosc, dat ook verantwoordelijk zal zijn voor aanvullende tests (eso1717).

[1] Zerodur® is eind jaren 60 van de vorige eeuw ontwikkeld voor toepassing in astronomische telescopen. Het vertoont bijna geen thermische uitzetting, zelfs wanneer het aan grote temperatuurschommelingen wordt blootgesteld. Daarnaast is het materiaal in chemisch opzicht heel resistent, waardoor het zich heel nauwkeurig laat polijsten. De eigenlijke reflectielaag, bestaande uit aluminium of zilver, wordt kort voordat een telescoop in bedrijf wordt genomen op het extreem gladde spiegeloppervlak gedampt – een proces dat naderhand met regelmatige tussenpozen moet worden herhaald. Veel befaamde telescopen met Zerodur®-spiegels, zoals ESO’s Very Large Telescope in Chili, zijn al tientallen jaren in bedrijf.

VISTA werkt in het infrarood en is de grootste surveytelescoop ter wereld en de VLT Survey Telescope is de grootste telescoop die specifiek is ontworpen om de hemel in zichtbaar licht in kaart te brengen. ESO speelt ook een belangrijke partnerrol bij ALMA, het grootste astronomische project van dit moment. En op Cerro Armazones, nabij Paranal, bouwt ESO de 39-meter Extremely Large Telescope, de ELT, die ‘het grootste oog op de hemel’ ter wereld zal worden.
