Andrew Levan, professor at the University of Warwick, speaks to the crowd about the implications of the first observations of a neutron star merger during the press conference at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) on 16 October 2017 in Garching bed München, Germany. Levan's team, along with teams from around Europe, used ESO telescopes in Chile to observe the aftermath of a neutron star merger, known as a kilonova.
