Engleagtig glorie på nattehimlen
Teleskoperne på ESOs La Silla Observatorium i Chile arbejder på at observere og forstå det store Univers - men meget tættere på hjemmefra der også masser af interessante naturfænomener. Et eksempel er denne 22-graders glorie med et engleagtigt skær. Billedet er taget højt oppe i den afsidesliggende Atacamaørken, men et lignende syn kan ses hele året rundt og fra alle steder i Verden.
Glorier af denne type dannes, når lyset fra Solen eller Månen passerer igennem cirrusskyer højt oppe i Jordens atmosfære. De små iskrystaller, som danner disse skyer, fungerer som miniatureprismer. De ændre retningen for det lys, som passerer igennem dem ved den effekt, som kaldes refraction. De lysstråler, som påvirkes på den måde har det med at samles i vinkler, hvor de bliver afbøjet så lidt som muligt i forhold til deres oprindelige retning. For lige præcis den facon af iskrystaller, som mest udgør cirrusskyerne, er den vinkel cirka 22 grader, og derfor ser vi denne her koncentrerede lysglorie i en vinkelafstand på 22 grader fra Månen.
ESOs 3,6-meterteleskop danner en passende forgrund i dette motiv. På teleskopet er monteret instrumentet HARPS (High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher). HARPS var et af to ESO instrumenter, som i 2016 opdagede exoplaneten Proxima b, som har næsten samme masse som Jorden, og som kredser om den stjerne, som er tættest på os bortset fra Solen. Stjernen, Proxima Centauri kan vi ikke se uden et teleskop, men den befinder sig meget tæt på den nederste af de to klare stjerner yderst til venstre i billedet; Alfa Centauri.
