ESO-teleskop observerer exoplanet med jernregn

Forskere, der bruger ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT), har observeret en ekstrem planet og har en mistanke om, at der regner jern på planeten. Den ultravarme kæmpeexoplanet har en dagside, hvor temperaturerne når over 2.400 grader celsius, hvilket er højt nok til at fordampe metaller. Stærke vinde bærer jerndampe til den køligere natteside, hvor dampene fortætter til jerndråber.

"Man kan sige, at planeten bliver regnfuld om aftenen, men det regner med jern," siger David Ehrenreich, professor ved Université de Genève i Schweiz. Han ledede et studie af den eksotiske exoplanet, og studiet publiceres i dag i Nature. Exoplaneten er kendt som WASP-76b og er omkring 640 lysår væk fra os i stjernebilledet Fiskene.

Det mærkelige fænomen opstår, fordi "jernregnsplaneten" altid kun viser én overflade, dagsiden, til dens moderstjerne, mens dens køligere natteside forbliver i evigt mørke. Ligesom Månen i kredsløb om Jorden er WASP-76b bundet i rotation. Det betyder, at det tager lige så lang tid at rotere omkring dens akse, som det tager at komme rundt om stjernen.

På dagsiden modtager planeten tusind gange mere stråling fra sin moderstjerne, end Jorden modtager fra Solen. Det er så varmt, at molekyler deles i atomer, og metaler som jern fordamper op i atmosfæren. Den ekstreme temperaturforskel mellem dag- og nattesiden resulterer i voldsomme vinde, som bærer jerndampene fra den ultravarme dagside til den køligere natteside, hvor temperaturerne falder til omkring 1.500 grader celsius.

WASP-76b har ikke kun forskellige dag- og nattetemperaturer. Ifølge det nye studie har den også særskilt dag- og nattekemi. Ved at bruge ESPRESSO-instrumentet på ESO’s VLT i den chilenske Atacamaørken har astronomer for første gang identificeret kemiske variationer på en ultravarm gaskæmpe. De opdagede en stærk jerndampesignatur på aftengrænsen, som deler planetens dagside fra dens natteside. ”Overraskende ser vi imidlertid ikke jerndampen om morgenen,” siger Ehrenreich. Årsagen, siger han, er, at "det regner med jern på nattesiden af denne ekstreme exoplanet".

"Observationerne viser, at atmosfæren på den varme dagside af WASP-76b er rig på jerndampe," tilføjer María Rosa Zapatero Osorio, der er astrofysiker ved Centro de Astrobiología (Center for Astrobiologi) i Madrid, Spanien, og formand for ESPRESSO-videnskabsholdet. "En andel af denne jerndamp er på nattesiden på grund af planetens rotation og atmosfæriske vinde. På nattesiden møder jernen meget køligere omgivelser, fortætter og skylles ud."

Forskningsresultatet bygger på de allerførste videnskabelige observationer foretaget med ESPRESSO i september 2018 af det videnskabelige konsortium, som byggede instrumentet: et hold fra Portugal, Italien, Schweiz, Spanien og ESO.

ESPRESSO (Echelle SPectrograph for Rocky Exoplanets and Stable Spectroscopic Observations) blev designet til at finde jordlignende planeter rundt om sollignende stjerner. Instrumentet har imidlertid vist sig at være meget mere alsidigt. "Vi opdagede hurtigt, at den bemærkelsesværdige indsamlingskraft i VLT og den ekstreme stabilitet i ESPRESSO gjorde det til en førsteklasses maskine i studiet af exoplaneters atmosfærer," siger Pedro Figueira, som er ESPRESSO-instrument-forsker ved ESO i Chile.

"Nu har vi en helt ny metode til at spore klimaet på de mest ekstreme exoplaneter," konkluderer Ehrenreich.

ESO er en af de største partnere i ALMA, som er det største eksisterende astronomiprojekt. For tiden bygges ELT, et 39 meter optisk og nærinfrarødt teleskop på Cerro Armazones, tæt ved Paranal. Det bliver "verdens største himmeløje".
