ALMA in winter

This image shows the barren landscape of the Chajnantor plateau, the site of the ALMA telescope array. The ground is sandy brown, and snowy mountains are located in the background of the image. The sky is cloudy, with patches of blue sky breaking through. To the left, there is one of the large array dishes of ALMA, and in the middle there is the blue-black service building. To the right there is a yellow large transporter, used to move the telescopes.

The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, or ALMA, site underneath amongst the snow-capped peaks of hte Chajnantor plateau. ALMA is the world's largest ground-based facility for observations in the millimeter/submillimeter regime, 5000 meters altitude in northern Chile.
