Venere: i dati di ALMA rielaborati e messi a disposizione della comunità scientifica

Una versione recente e meglio calibrata dei dati relativi al pianeta Venere, raccolti in Cile con ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array), è ora stata resa pubblica attraverso l’archivio scientifico di ALMA.
Le osservazioni del nostro pianeta gemello effettuate con ALMA, di cui l’ESO è un partner, sono state eseguite nel 2019 su richiesta di un’équipe di astronomi guidata da Jane Greaves, dell’Università di Cardiff, nel Regno Unito. Il gruppo ha utilizzato i dati di ALMA per verificare se la rara molecola di fosfina fosse presente nelle nubi di Venere, dopo avere individuato tracce di questo elemento nelle osservazioni del JCMT (James Clerk Maxwell Telescope), gestito dall’Osservatorio dell’Asia orientale, alle Hawaii.
La scoperta ha attirato l’attenzione a livello internazionale, visto il valore della fosfina come possibile biomarcatore, e ha anche stimolato un vivace dibattito scientifico, che ha visto gruppi di ricerca in tutto il mondo impegnati a esaminare minuziosamente questo studio e i dati a esso associati.
In conseguenza di ciò, il personale che lavora con ALMA ha individuato un problema nei dati raccolti: una falsa 'increspatura' nelle osservazioni di Venere che potrebbe avere influito sul rilevamento della fosfina. È particolrmente difficoltoso individuare segnali deboli da oggetti molto luminosi del Sistema Solare, come Venere, poiché i parametri di impostazione necessari per realizzare questo tipo di osservazione con ALMA sono molto rigidi. Inoltre, il personale che lavora con ALMA ha scoperto problemi di piccola entità riguardanti il software che, sommati alle particolari impostazioni necessarie per le osservazioni di Venere, hanno causato l’apparizione dell’'increspatura' nei dati.
Dopo che il potenziale problema è stato identificato, seguendo una procedura standard, il personale dell’ESO che lavora presso l’European ALMA Regional Centre ha rimosso i dati dall’archivio scientifico di ALMA per risolvere il problema. Adesso, è stata caricata nell'archivio un versione più accurata e ricalibrata dei dati, a disposizione della comunità astronomica.
Greaves e il suo gruppo hanno utilizzato i dati ri-calibrati in un nuovo studio (non ancora sottoposto a peer review) sull’atmosfera venusiana. Altri gruppi di ricerca interessati allo studio di Venere possono ora utilizzare la versione dei dati elaborata in modo più accurato per valutare l’attendibilità del rilevamento di fosfina, aiutandoci, così facendo, ad ampliare la nostra conoscenza sul nostro pianeta gemello.
