Tom Ray gekozen als nieuwe voorzitter van de ESO-Raad

Tom Ray, hoogleraar en directeur Kosmische Fysica aan het Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, Ierland, is gekozen als de volgende voorzitter van ESO’s belangrijkste bestuursorgaan, de Raad. Hij vertegenwoordigt momenteel Ierland in de ESO-Raad en is de eerste Ierse staatsburger die tot voorzitter van de ESO-Raad is gekozen.

Ik kijk ernaar uit om mijn werk met de ESO-Raad voort te zetten, en ben vereerd dat ik als volgende voorzitter ben gekozen,’ zegt Ray. ‘ESO blijft toonaangevend op het gebied van de astronomie vanaf de grond, en de komende jaren zullen spannende ontwikkelingen brengen. De Extremely Large Telescope, ‘het grootste oog op de hemel ter wereld’, is voor meer dan de helft voltooid, terwijl de nieuwe instrumenten en infrastructurele verbeteringen van de Very Large Telescope ervoor zorgen dat deze een sleutelrol blijft spelen bij het onderzoeken van het heelal. En  ALMA, dat dit jaar tien jaar van ontdekkingen viert, zal veel gedetailleerdere waarnemingen van het koude heelal kunnen doen met de komende upgrade van de breedbandgevoeligheid.’

Ray begon zijn carrière in de radioastronomie bij Jodrell Bank (VK) en promoveerde in 1981 aan de Universiteit van Manchester. In 1986 werd hij hoogleraar aan het Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, waar hij tot op de dag van vandaag onderzoek doet naar de vorming van sterren en planeten.

Ray vertegenwoordigde Ierland in de ESO-Raad sinds het land in 2018 lid werd van ESO en heeft ook zitting in de waarnemingsprogramma-commissie van ESO. Momenteel is hij lid van de bestuursraad van ALMA. Daarnaast heeft hij een belangrijke rol gespeeld bij de ontwikkeling van instrumentatie voor missies van NASA en het Europese ruimteagentschap ESA, en is hij lid geweest van verschillende internationale commissies, waaronder talrijke commissies voor de toewijzing van waarneemtijd en de Raad van de Koninklijke Ierse Akademie.

Ray is de opvolger van Linda Tacconi, senior-astronoom aan het Max-Planck-Institut für extraterrestrische Physik in Garching, Duitsland, die in 2020 in deze functie werd gekozen. Namens alle ESO-medewerkers bedankt ESO-directeur-generaal Xavier Barcons Tacconi: ‘Ik wil Linda bedanken voor haar toewijding en leiderschap als voorzitter van de Raad, waarbij ze toezicht hield op vele mijlpalen in bijzonder uitdagende tijden. Ik kijk ernaar uit om met Tom samen te werken in zijn nieuwe rol als voorzitter van de Raad.’
