The Paranal foundation ceremony
On 4 December 1996, the “Foundation Ceremony” for the Paranal Observatory took place on Cerro Paranal. Holding the time capsule in his hands before inserting it in a cavity at the Antu Telescope is the President of Chile, Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle. To the left and applauding is Peter Creola, ESO Council President.
