Áustria desenvolve software para o ESO

Como parte da contribuição da Áustria na adesão ao ESO, duas equipas de especialistas neste país desenvolveram software que oferece melhorias significativas sobre métodos tradicionais.
Uma equipa da Universidade de Innsbruck [1] desenvolveu algoritmos de correção atmosférica e métodos de software, e na Universidade de Viena [2] uma equipa de astrónomos e matemáticos desenvolveu software que combina automaticamente dados de diferentes observações astronómicas, criando mosaicos finais de dados.
A nova correção atmosférica aproxima-se dos modelos e corrige a influência da atmosfera terrestre nos dados observacionais obtidos com telescópios instalados no solo. Para além de fazer poupar tempo de observação, permite uma correção muito precisa - o que leva a um uso mais eficiente do Very Large Telescope do ESO (VLT).
Stefan Kimeswenger da Universidade de Innsbruck diz: “Estamos convencidos de que o trabalho científico diário levado a cabo pelos astrónomos responsáveis pelas observações do telescópio se tornará muito mais fácil graças a este novo software e que a qualidade dos resultados científicos melhorará significativamente.”
Até agora, os astrónomos faziam tradicionalmente observações adicionais para medir e, mais tarde, corrigir a influência da atmosfera terrestre nos dados colectados. No entanto, este método necessita de tempo de observação extra e está condicionado à variabilidade atmosférica. Os novos pacotes de correção atmosférica foram disponibilizados a toda a comunidade astronómica em abril de 2014 e o modelo atmosférico completo está também acessível nas páginas do ESO através de uma interface própria.
O segundo software, desenvolvido pela equipa de Viena, permite juntar muitas imagens separadas em mosaicos de dados. Esta técnica pode ser utilizada em conjuntos de imagens obtidas com instrumentos do ESO a trabalhar tanto no óptico como no infravermelho.
Werner Zeilinger da Universidade de Viena diz:” O novo software ajudará os astrónomos a obter mosaicos de dados de modo praticamente automático - aumentando assim significativamente a eficiência do processo de redução de dados.”
Outra equipa da Universidade de Linz desenvolveu já algoritmos muito rápidos de óptica adaptativa para o European Extremely Large Telescope do ESO (E-ELT), também no âmbito da contribuição da Áustria na sua adesão ao ESO.
