Impression eines Sonnenuntergangs
Die Sonne geht über dem Paranal-Observatorium unter, zeichnet zarte Farbnuancierungen über den Himmel und erinnert an Landschaftsbilder von Monet. Die spärlichen Wolken leuchten warm unter den letzten Strahlen der Sonne und die knackige Klarheit der Luft ist nahezu fühlbar – und betont warum die ESO diese Region in Chile für ihre Observatorien ausgewählt hat. Dämmerungsstrahlen – und Schatten der Wolken – weisen von der Sonne weg und scheinen am Sonnengegenpunkt zusammenzulaufen.
Zwei der vier Hilfsteleskope (engl. Auxiliary Telescopes, kurz ATs) des Very Large Telescopes (VLT) sind linkerhand zu sehen und warten geduldig auf den Einbruch der Dunkelheit, um mit der Erkundung des Kosmos zu beginnen.
Wenn die Sonne untergegangen ist, leiten die 1,8-Meter Spiegel der ATs Sternlicht zum Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI), wo es kombiniert wird, um die schärfsten Abbilder des Universums zu erzeugen. Die beweglichen ATs sind auf Schienen montiert und können auf der VLT Anlage verschoben werden, um den Himmel aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln zu beobachten.
