Una nuova immagine della cometa ISON

Questa nuova immagine della cometa C/2012 S1 (ISON) è stata presa con il telescopio nazionale TRAPPIST all’osservatorio ESO di La Silla la mattina di venerdì 15 novembre 2013. La cometa ISON è stata vista per la prima volta nei nostri cieli nel settembre 2012 ed effettuerà il suo massimo avvicinamento al Sole verso la fine di novembre 2013.

TRAPPIST ha monitorato la cometa ISON a partire da metà ottobre, usando filtri a banda larga come quelli usati in quest’immagine. Ha anche usato degli speciali filtri a banda stretta che isolano l’emissione di gas vari, permettendo agli astronomi di contare quante molecole di ciascun tipo la cometa rilascia.

La cometa ISON è rimasta abbastanza tranquilla il 1 novembre 2013, quando una prima esplosione ha raddoppiato la quantità di gas emessi dalla cometa. Il 13 novembre, proprio prima che questa foto fosse scattata, un secondo e gigantesco scoppio ha scosso la cometa, aumentando la sua attività di un fattore dieci. Ora è abbastanza luminosa da essere vista con un buono binocolo da un sito oscuro, nel cielo mattutino verso Est. Nelle ultime notti la cometa si è stabilizzata al suo nuovo livello di attività.

Queste esplosioni erano causate dall’intenso calore del Sole che raggiunge il ghiaccio nei piccoli nuclei della cometa mentre si avvicina al Sole, causando così la sublimazione del ghiaccio e gettando enormi quantità di polvere e gas nello spazio. Nel momento in cui ISON si avvicinerà al massimo al Sole il 28 novembre (a solo 1,2 milioni di chilometri dalla sua superficie – poco meno del diametro del Sole!), il calore causerà sublimazione in una quantità ancora maggiore di ghiaccio. Ma potrebbe anche rompere l’intero nucleo in due piccolo frammenti, che evaporerebbero del tutto nel momento in cui la cometa si allontanerebbe dall’intenso calore del Sole. Se ISON sopravvive al passaggio vicino al Sole, potrebbe diventare incredibilmente brillante nel cielo del mattino.

L’immagine è una composizione di 4 diverse esposizioni da 30 secondi attraverso il filtro blu, verde, rosso e quasi-infrarosso. Mentre la cometa si muove davanti alle stelle sullo sfondo, queste appaiono come punti multicolore.

TRAPPIST (TRAnsiting Planets and PlanetesImals Small Telescope) è dedicato allo studio dei sistemi planetari tramite due metodi: l’individuazione e caratterizzazione di pianeti collocati fuori dal sistema solare (esopianeti) e lo studio di comete orbitanti attorno al Sole. Il telescopio nazionale da 60 cm è operato da un centro di controllo a Liegi, in Belgio, a 12 000 km di distanza.
