Prezident Chile navštívil observatoř Paranal a oznámil poskytnutí pozemků pro stavbu E-ELT

Na slavnosti, která se uskutečnila 27. října 2013 na observatoři ESO/Paranal v chilské poušti Atacama, předal chilský prezident Sebastián Piñera zástupcům ESO podepsané formální dokumenty stvrzující, že chilská vláda poskytne ESO pozemky v oblasti Cerro Armazones. Cerro Armazones je hora vysoká 3060 m, která se v budoucnu stane domovem dalekohledu E-ELT (European Extremely Large Telescope). Nachází se asi 20 kilometrů od observatoře na hoře Cerro Paranal, kde sídlí dalekohledy komplexu ESO/VLT (Very Large Telescope).
Presidenta Piñeru přijali na observatoři Paranal Tim de Zeeuw, generální ředitel ESO, Fernando Comerón, zástupce ESO v Chile a Uelli Weilenmann – zástupce ředitele observatoře La Silla–Paranal. Prezidenta doprovázeli Alfredo Moreno, chilský ministr zahraničí a zástupci místních samospráv.
Během návštěvy se uskutečnila rovněž prohlídka vrcholu Cerro Paranal, kde dnes sídlí komplex dalekohledů VLT (Very Large Telescope), nejvyspělejší dalekohled na světě pro viditelnou oblast světla.
Během ceremoniálu v budově Residencia předal prezident Piñera generálnímu řediteli ESO nedávno podepsané veřejné dokumenty, kterými dává pozemky v oblasti Cerro Armazones organizaci ESO k dispozici. Prezident rovněž upozornil na potřebu ochrany oblohy v severním Chile. „Učinili jsme důležitý krok k upevnění pozice Chile na čele světové astronomie. Dalekohled E-ELT se stane naším největším okem hledícím k obloze, okem, které bude pod chilskou oblohou odhalovat dosud skrytá tajemství vesmíru. Dnes je významný den pro moderní astronomii a také pro Chile.“
Generální ředitel ESO vyjádřil vděčnost chilské vládě za důležitý krok, který učinila: „Spolupráce mezi Chile a ESO začala před 50 lety. Ukázala se nejen jako přínosná a trvalá, ale skýtá rovněž mimořádné příležitosti pro budoucnost – pro rozvoj Chile, pro členské státy ESO a pro pokrok na poli vědy a technologie. E-ELT je toho jasným důkazem.“
Podle schválených dokumentů poskytne chilská vláda 189 čtverečních kilometrů pozemků kolem hory Cerro Armazones pro instalaci dalekohledu E-ELT a po dobu 50 let bude garantovat koncesi vztahující se k oblastem okolo observatoře. Tato větší oblast o rozloze 362 čtverečních kilometrů bude ochraňovat dalekohled E-ELT před světelným znečištěním a vlivy těžebních aktivit. Dalekohled E-ELT by měl být v operačním stavu na počátku příštího desetiletí a bude využívat společného zázemí s observatoří Paranal.
Slavnost navázala na podpis smlouvy chilským ministrem zahraničí v říjnu 2011.

ESO také vedoucí úlohu při podpoře a organizaci spolupráce v astronomickém výzkumu. ESO provozuje tři unikátní pozorovací střediska světového významu nacházející se v Chile: La Silla, Paranal a Chajnantor. Na Observatoři Paranal provozuje Velmi velký teleskop (VLT), což je nejvyspělejší astronomická observatoř pro viditelnou oblast světla, a také dva další přehlídkové teleskopy. VISTA pracuje v infračervené části spektra a je největším přehlídkovým dalekohledem na světě, dalekohled VST (VLT Survey Telescope) je největším teleskopem navrženým k prohlídce oblohy výhradně ve viditelné části spektra. ESO je evropským partnerem revolučního astronomického teleskopu ALMA, největšího astronomického projektu současnosti. Pro viditelnou a blízkou infračervenou oblast ESO rovněž plánuje nový dalekohled E-ELT (European Extremely Large optical/near-infrared Telescope) s primárním zrcadlem o průměru 39 metrů, který se stane „největším okem do vesmíru“.
