APEX festeggia dieci anni di esplorazione dell'Universo freddo
L'Esperimento Atacama Pathfinder in Cile aspetta con impazienza ulteriori successi di astronomia all'avanguardia

Si è festeggiato alla stazione base di APEX [1] a Sequitor, San Pedro de Atacama, per celebrare i dieci anni di ricerca astronomica con il telescopio APEX, che si trova sull'Altopiano Chajnantor in Cile, 5100 metri sopra il livello del mare.
Da lì, il telescopio osserva il cielo nelle lunghezze d'onda submillimetriche, permettendo agli astronomi l'accesso alle regioni più fredde dell'Universo, che non possono essere osservate nella luce visibile. Mentre attende con ansia ulteriori scoperte all'avanguardia nell'astronomia osservativa, il telescopio da 12 metri APEX ha già dato contributi significativi in molteplici campi dell'astronomia, inclusa la scoperta di nuove molecole interstellari e le immagini profonde del cielo submillimetrico, portando a nuove intuizioni sulla formazione stellare nella Via Lattea e nelle galassie distanti con formazione stellare nell'Universo primordiale.
La stazione base di Sequitor è stata scelta per la festa, in quanto si trova ad un'altitudine più confortevole di 2500 metri sopra il livello del mare. I partecipanti hanno comunque avuto l'opportunità di visitare il sito del telescopio stesso, come mostra la nostra foto. Per l'occasione erano presenti alcuni ospiti speciali, inclusi l'ambasciatore tedesco in Cile, Rolf Schulze, il presidente della Max Planck Society, Martin Stratmann, e il direttore generale dell'ESO, Tim de Zeeuw. Tra gli altri collaboratori di APEX hanno partecipato all'evento anche Karl Menten e il responsabile del progetto Rolf Güsten dal MPIfR (Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy) e John Conway dall'OSO (Onsala Space Observatory) in Svezia.

[1] Nel corso dei passati dieci anni, circa 2000 scienziati hanno usato dati ottenuti con APEX per progetti scientifici, che hanno dato luogo a più di 500 pubblicazioni. I principali risultati di APEX includono la scoperta di cinque nuove molecole nel mezzo interstellare e anche grandi survey come ATLASGAL (APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy), e LESS (LABOCA Survey of the Extended Chandra Deep Field South). Entrambe hanno usato il grande rivelatore bolometrico LABOCA (Large APEX Bolometer Camera) per misurare l'attività di formazione stellare nella Via Lattea e nelle prime fasi dell'Universo. Il telescopio APEX sfrutta il suo accesso al cielo del sud, in particolare alle parti centrali della Via Lattea e delle Nubi di Magellano.
