Os Sons do ALMA, um projeto interativo em busca de uma linguagem cósmica comum

Os Sons do ALMA, um projeto que junta artistas e astrónomos na procura de uma linguagem comum, lançou um novo website interativo.
Em finais de 2015, o Atacama Large millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) e o Departamento de Astronomia da Universidade do Chile, em conjunto com a Sónar+D e a Corporação de Vídeo chilena, convidaram músicos e artistas para trabalhar com sons criados a partir de observações obtidas com o mais poderoso rádio telescópio do mundo.
“O banco de sons do ALMA é constituído por uma série de sons de percussão criados a partir do padrão de sons de espectros electromagnéticos da Nebulosa de Orion,” explica o astrónomo Antonio Hales. “As riscas de emissão de moléculas presentes na Nebulosa de Orion foram transformadas em notas de música, transpondo os “acordes” do céu para acordes de som. O banco de sons é, como o seu nome implica, uma biblioteca digital de sons, que se encontra disponível a toda a comunidade musical.”
O projeto Sons do ALMA estará também patente ao público na feira de inovação e tecnologia que ocorre em paralelo com o festival Sónar+D em Fira de Montjuic em Barcelona, Espanha, entre os dias 6 e 18 de junho de 2016. O projeto terá um stand com instrumentos digitais com interfaces MIDI, as quais permitirão à audiência interagir diretamente com o banco de sons cósmicos dos Sons do ALMA, enquanto imagens e vídeos são projetadas em ecrãs grandes. A companhia chilena Trimex apresentará também uma representação artística dos planetas do Sistema Solar.
Na sexta-feira dia 17 de junho às 15:30 (hora de Portugal Continental), terá lugar uma mesa redonda liderada pelo curador do projeto, Enrique Rivera, e que contará com a participação do astrónomo do ALMA Antonio Hales e com Mónica Bello, responsável pela relação entre ciência e arte no CERN (Organização Europeia de Investigação Nuclear). O debate tratará de assuntos como os incentivos que existem para incorporar artistas em espaços científicos e como é que a sua interação com os cientistas se vai modificando à medida que se vão conhecendo melhor uns aos outros.

A iniciativa Sons do ALMA nasceu no festival SonarSound Santiago, que decorreu no antigo aeroporto Los Cerrillos de Santiago a 5 de dezembro de 2015. Após o evento, os músicos continuaram a usar a plataforma online dos Sons do ALMA, que tem atualmente mais de 3200 utilizadores registados, os quais usaram estes sons para criar as suas próprias melodias, muitas das quais foram posteriormente partilhadas na mesma plataforma. Adicionalmente, o DJ Luciano lançou recentemente um disco de vinil que inclui algumas destas músicas.
O ALMA, uma infraestrutura astronómica internacional, é uma parceria entre o ESO, a Fundação Nacional para a Ciência dos Estados Unidos (NSF) e os Institutos Nacionais de Ciências da Natureza (NINS) do Japão, em cooperação com a República do Chile.
