Když se potká sever a jih
Z pohledu na tento snímek se vám možná trochu motá hlava. Obrázek týdne zachycuje severní i jižní polokouli najednou - celou oblohu v jedné zapeklité fotografii - což by však bylo ve skutečnosti nemožné.
Obrázek je tvořen dvěma snímky, které fotografové Petr Horálek a Juan Carlos Casado pořídili na observatořích umístěných ve stejné zeměpisné šířce na severní a jižní polokouli. Horní snímek pochází z Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias’ Roque de los Muchachos Observatory na La Palmě na Kanárských ostrovech, který se nachází 29 stupňů severně od rovníku, zatímco spodní polovina pochází z observatoře La Silla v chilské poušti Atacama, 29 stupňů jižně od rovníku. Po jejich digitálním propojení vytvořily nepřerušený pohled na noční oblohu.
Jedním z nejvýraznějších prvků obrázku je tajuplná bílá záře vycházející vertikálně z jeho středu. Jde o zvířetníkové světlo - fenomén způsobený prachem prostupujícím Sluneční soustavou a rozptylujícím sluneční paprsky, který je vidět pouze v oblastech s velmi tmavou oblohou bez světelného znečištění. V paprsku zvířetníkového světla severní polokoule jasně září planeta Venuše.
Na spodním obrázku najdeme několik dalekohledů na La Silla včetně ESO 1-metre Schmidt telescope v popředí. Reflexní zrcadlo, obrácené vzhůru nohama na horním snímku, je součástí skupiny gamma dalekohledů Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), která zkoumá některé z nejenergetičtějších událostí ve Vesmíru. Druhá skupina bude nainstalována na jižní polokouli nedaleko observatoře Paranal díky dohodě mezi ESO a CTA.
